MAKING A COMPLAINT

Here are expressions you can use when complaining:
  • I have a complaint to make. ...
  • Sorry to bother you but...
  • I'm sorry to say this but...
  • I'm afraid I've got a complaint about...
  • I'm afraid there is a slight problem with...
  • Excuse me but there is a problem about...
  • There seems to be a problem with…
  • I’m not satisfied with…
Positive response to complaints:
  • I'm so sorry, but this will never occur / happen again.
  • I'm really sorry; we'll do our best not to make the same mistake again.

Negative response to complaints:

  • Sorry there is nothing we can do about it.
  • I'm afraid, there isn't much we can do about it.

If you do not agree with the solution given:

This is unfair. /I don’t think this is fair.
This is ridiculous. / I think this is ridiculous.
This seems unreasonable/I think that sounds unreasonable.

Can I speak to your supervisor?
Can I speak to your manager?
Is there someone else I could speak to about this matter?

When expressing a complaint in English, it helps to be polite. Although "I'm angry about your pizza. It's too salty" is one possible way of expressing a complaint, it is considered too rude and you'd better use more polite expressions if you want to get what you want.

WRITING: PROVIDING SOLUTIONS TO A PROBLEM

The text below is a model essay of providing solutions to problems. A problem solution essay should consist of the following parts:
a. Introduction - where you describe the problems. Try to capture the reader's attention.
b. Main body - different paragraphs where solutions are provided and the expected results are stated.
c. Conclusion - where you summarize your views. You should end with a strong call to action and explain what will happen if we don't do our best to solve the problem.
d. Note that you should also think of a title for your essay, something that will attract the reader.

There is no plan(-et) B

Have you ever stopped to consider if your lifestyle is destroying the environment?  , unfortunately, it is. Scientists have been warning us for decades  most of us continue to contribute to the destruction. Would it be so difficult to change?
Water is essential for our everyday life  our use of chemical products has caused widespread pollution.  , we should use eco-friendly products such as natural detergents or manure  chemical ones.
Hundreds of thousands of people die every year from air pollution caused by traffic exhaust fumes.  more of us used public transport rather than our own vehicle, air quality in the cities would improve. (  , it would cut traffic jams and road accidents).
Use of fossil fuels leads to climate change. The government must invest more to develop alternative sustainable energy resources. Here in Spain,  , all new buildings could be installed with solar panels.
, improving the environment requires a major change in our lifestyles but there is no alternative if we want to avoid catastrophe.  what are you waiting for?
